Tingling in the joints can be a worrying symptom. It is quite common for people to state that they wake up with this discomfort, or that they suffer from it continuously.

What are the joints?

A joint is an area where the ends of two or more bones or a bone and cartilage meet. Thanks to them the body can move; they make it possible for the legs, arms and back to bend and turn.

Between the bones that make up the joint there is an elastic and flexible tissue, the articular cartilage. Cartilage prevents friction between bones by acting as a cushioning system.

The joint is surrounded by a “joint bag” that supports this entire system. This bag is reinforced by ligaments that prevent the joints from being easily damaged.

Why does tingling appear in the joints?

  • The person who suffers from it has reduced ability to move. After a period of tingling, more intense pain may appear.
  • It appears when calcium crystals accumulate in the joint.  Then the tingling begins, the cartilage weakens, gradually wears out, and the pain increases.
  • It mainly damages the wrists, knees and fingers of the hands, although it can also injure any other joint.   This disease is associated with osteoarthritis and thyroid disorders.
  • It is an uncomfortable condition, but it does not destroy the joint.

    Osteomyelitis

    It is a bone disease caused by microorganisms, according to this study carried out by the University of Costa Rica. The germs reach the bones through the bloodstream and if they settle in the joint, they cause injury.

    The initial symptom is tingling, but then the pain worsens. It is a disease that is cured with the use of antibiotics and affects both children and adults.

    Lupus

    It is an autoimmune disease. The immune system, instead of fulfilling its function of defending the body, attacks healthy tissues. It can damage different parts of the body.

    • Tingling in the joints is one of the symptoms that the bones or cartilage are being affected by lupus.
    • A definitive cure for lupus is not recognized, but it is manageable.

    Diet is important. There are foods that provide nutrients that help prevent joint pain and the diseases that cause them.

    • Omega 3. It is very effective, as it reduces inflammation and slows the wear of the articular cartilage. Oily fish and flax seeds are high in omega 3. It can also be taken as a supplement in capsules.
    • Celery. It has diuretic properties and acts as an antioxidant, according to this study by Kurdistan University. It is advisable for detoxification and re-mineralization treatments for the body. It should not be missing in the diet, whether in salads, juices or infusions.
    • Nettles. Its anti-inflammatory properties may help calm arthritis symptoms, this study from Isfahan University (Iran) suggests. It can be eaten as food or prepare a mixture of macerated leaves and alcohol with which the affected area will be rubbed.
    • Ginger.  According to this study by the previous university, it is a powerful anti-inflammatory. It can be consumed as an infusion or incorporated grated into other foods.
